Family of the Year – Songbook
Unexpectedly discovering new music is a very good thing, and I definitely don’t do it enough…shows are too expensive when you’re unemployed, I no longer have obscure, student-run radio to listen to, and friends have been slacking in the suggestion department. Yeasayer. are. brilliant.
If i’m right, they snuck in and supported Bat For Lashes at the Academy – anyone see that? How good was it? ( I think I can by-pass the question of ‘Was it good?’) Anyway, they have announced a new tour:
Paperplain
It’s calm, sweet, and maybe not to everyones tastes, but if you’re a fan of Joanna Newsom, Alessi’s Ark and other softly sung folk loveliness- this is for you. Delicately produced to allow space for every hum and ding of the instruments to shine though, having only heard tracks 1130, Pale Town and Spin Wheel from her Myspace page I am very excited about her debut mini-album which is out on Jan 18th on Destructible.

Reflection Eternal
Nine years ago, Reflection Eternal (a collaboration between Talib Kweli and Hi-Tek) released their one and only album, “Train of Thought”. It was slick; the near perfect hip-hop record. The combination of Kweli’s crisp articulacy and Hi-Tek’s production capabilities lead to an album which explored the different, almost schizophrenic sides of hip-hop; from the spitting lyrics of “Ghetto Afterlife”, the mellow smoothness of “Memories Live”, and the deep soul of “Touch You”, “Train of Thought” covered it all and did it with serious aplomb.
