Kyle Bibby / Art Fag

Kyle Bibby is an independent graphic artist living and working in Leeds. He shares a house with two other graphic designers so it’s like he lives in some kind of graphic design world where it’s hard to define what’s real and what’s made from vectors. I like to think his house is made by apple and his kitchen is decorated in 320 GSM Hardwood Pulp Stock…

Firstly, Can you describe an average day?

I’m not sure if there is such thing as an average day, but if there were it might go something like this: Wake up around 8 or 9 and go downstairs to the studio (that I share with Cat Wickes and Merlin Mason). Sit in my dressing gown drinking coffee and eating toast while I check my emails and that sort of thing. Next I’ll get dressed and do whatever work needs doing until it is finished or I’ve gone mental — this could be anytime between 3pm and 3am. Hopefully it will be earlier rather than later so I have time to get away from my computer for a bit in the evening.

Can you remember your first interest in art/design?

I started making BMX videos when I was around 16, I think it was this that lead me away from an ‘academic’ education. I decided to do a National Diploma in Media so I could carry on making videos, but I got more into graphic design side of the course which lead me to apply for a design design degree at Leeds College of Art.

I think having an outside interest (like BMX) is a really good way focus creative skills, creating situations and subjects for video, design, photography, etc. that you may not encounter otherwise.

What have you got planned this week?

This week is the first in a long time that I have not got a ridiculous workload! All I have planned is a couple of meetings with potential new clients, waiting to get paid from my last job and hoping it will stop raining.

Where do you draw inspiration from?

All sorts of places. Aside from the obvious design magazines and websites, I am inspired by meeting new people, listening to music, politics, and the (possibly cliché) desire to make some sort of a difference. I think that good design is much more than something that looks nice, I believe ‘the message’ should hold more importance than aesthetics, so for that reason I think that designers cannot simply draw inspiration from design.

If I were to ask your friends about you, what would say?

Ha, ha! Good question… they would probably tell you not to lend me anything…

Tell us a good fact?

When I was 18 I managed to float my parents Suzuki Swift a quarter of a mile down a river trying to cross a ford after it had been raining loads. Luckily it got so full of water and came to a stop underneath a telegraph pole that had fallen over, so I managed to climb out of the window and crawl across the pole to safety. Not my proudest moment, but it makes a good story…
